Building on the haunting beauty of his 2020 debut album Chants From Another Place, Swedish songwriter Jonathan Hultén returns this year with the highly anticipated follow-up - Eyes Of The Living Night. Recorded at Stockholm’s Chanting Studios and co-produced with Ola Ersfjord (Lady Blackbird/Tribulation/Monolord), Eyes Of The Living Night is a remarkable showcase of Hultén’s distinctive blend of folk, rock and pop. Drawing influence from the likes of Bert Jansch, John Martyn and Nick Drake as well as contemporaries such as Anna Ternheim, Chelsea Wolfe and Hexvessel, Hultén’s music both acknowledges the genre’s heritage and reinvents it in innovative and intriguing ways.
“Staggering emotional depth, as well as an astonishing poetic economy, his less-is-more approach creates a sense of reverence and vulnerability that invest the material with a potent vitality” - Metal Hammer
Eyes of the Living Night delves deep into the human spirit. Merging the raw emotion of his earlier work with a more expansive, otherworldly sound, Jonathan Hultén has created an album that shimmers, taking listeners through the decades of rock, synth-pop, blues and folk on a journey best described as “Ambient Dream-grunge”.
“His multi-tracked vocals make for goosebump-raising ASMR” – Classic Rock
“The title Eyes Of The Living Night is about reawakening a sense of awe and wonder in one's perception of the world” Hultén comments. “Finding imagination to be a key to breaking free from the wheels of stagnation and to rediscover hidden treasures within the depths of one's mind. To plunge into the abyss of your own fears and anxieties and to emerge on the other side, transformed by the experience. The "living night" as a concept symbolizes the mystery and hidden creative potential we all carry.”
The new album follows extensive European touring from Hultén throughout 2023 and 2024, most notably his recent series of shows supporting legendary act, The Cult, in Europe and the UK, with a North America tour confirmed in February 2025 with Uncle Acid And The Deadbeats.
