Formed in 1996 in a small college town outside of Nashville TN, Serotonin was a pioneering hybrid of early emo, math rock, fast punk and DIY hardcore. Sonically influenced by everything from Botch to The Promise Ring, Serotonin fit on almost any extreme or indie bill and toured with acts diversely ranging from Piebald to From Ashes Rise. Known for blending emotionally charged songwriting with aggressive punk energy, Serotonin carved out a distinct, dramatic sound shaped by post-hardcore, emo, and melodic noise rock. With complex and surprising stop/start parts and change-on-a-dime time signatures, Serotonin often seemed ahead of the times in their song construction. Serotonin returned to the stage and studio in Nashville in 2025, reuniting two decades after their last performances. Their comeback reignited interest in the band’s influential catalog and helped introduce a new generation to the emotionally driven sound that in some part helped shape Middle Tennessee’s underground music history. They have written a slew of new songs and are releasing four of them on a new EP for Immigrant Sun, called “The Price.”
With their first new recording in 23 years, Tennessee’s Serotonin has maintained the original core of what set their music apart, while incorporating another two decades of influences. With lyrics concerning time’s passing and aging and all that comes with it, from personal loss to the destruction of places and systems that have been around since they were young, Serotonin continues to transform personal memories into universal themes, all couched in their trademark complex mix of emo, math rock, and hardcore.
