Having met at Combined Effort matinees in downtown Albany 1987-88 and Common Ground shows in Schenectady shortly after, in the summer of 1989 five high school kids from across the Capital District started a band and recorded a demo that was well distributed and much loved amongst the scene. It was during this session at Hyland Studio on Central Ave when Ted, with pen in hand to label the cassette tape, asked “so what’s the name?” They became Substance. The band’s line-up quickly started to change while going on to play shows from NYC to Burlington, Syracuse to the Anthrax... all ages to clubs... hardcore to metal. Some early live recordings were well circulated (Eagles Lodge fall 1989, WNYU Crucial Chaos spring 1990), and they made appearances on the Welcome to Albany (1990) and This Town We Own (1991) 7” compilations – which was the only light seen from several studio recordings including the final four-song 7” session (summer 1991), unreleased until now. In 2025 the 34 year old multi-track tape was exhumed from storage on the West Coast, and shipped to a studio in Nashville that still had a rare old working Akai mixing console to digitize the audio, and in 2026 the music returned to upstate New York where it was remixed and remastered. Hear the previously unreleased Substance 7” on side A of this LP, and on side B some other recordings from along the way.
